Work started this week on the refurbishment of Wests’ practice nets at Graceville Memorial Park with the removal of the old net structure.

Club secretary Dan Maroske expressed regret at the passing of the old setup which served the club well for over 40 years: “Wearing a black armband tonight, many a bunny created in those nets over the last 15 years,” he said, but welcomed the prospect of creating new history in net 3 aka “Big D’s Hutch” in the upgraded complex!

The upgrade project includes several stages. Stage 1A is currently underway and involves the replacement of the wicket surfacing and the nets structure. One of the new nets will feature a special “spin wicket” surface which will give our tweakers fantastic latitude to bamboozle our batsmen.

Stage 1B involves upgrading the lighting with LED luminaires to ensure Dan’s bunnies continue to be trapped in the headlights. Stage 2 works will add two additional bays to the facility. These stages are expected to proceed in the next couple of months and the bowlers runups will be refurbished at the end of the season.
