Our women’s first grade team pulled off another great come-from-behind win this weekend, this time over Sandgate-Redcliffe. Our second grade girls fought hard but went down to Valleys.

First Grade OD vs Sandgate-Redcliffe

Wests bowled first and took a few overs to get going until Ash Sims took two wickets in two balls. Sandgate -Redcliffe recovers to be 63 before Annie Wikman snared Julie Cavanough’s wicket and shortly afterward sharp fielding from Naiya Varidel had gun Sandgate-Redcliffe opener Tess Cooper run out for 47. Within a few more overs Naiya had draw edges and two infield catches with her legspin, and the visitors were looking shaky at 6 for 90. Zoe Valenic and Darcy Johnson combined to hold off the dogs for a number of overs at take the score to 136 before Annie skittled Zoe’s sticks. Annie had Darcy caught by Lilli Hamilton at midwicket a few balls later and Sandgate-Redcliffe’s innings quickly folded after that to be all done for a modest total of 149.

Wests batting began slowly before Naiya was run out backing up for a quick single. Eloise Schabe holed out soon after and Annie, Liv Totten and Liv Steel followed quickly to leave the girls precariously placed at 5-58 and still 92 runs short of the target. Emma Lockwood and Sophie Whittaker edged the score to 77 before Emma was bowled, and Ash Sims departed soon after and Wests were in deep trouble at 7-90.

Sophie Whittaker and newly arrived bat Scarlett Varidel dug in though, added a grafting 29 before Scarlett was bowled by a quicker arm ball from Janelle Pais. Lilli Bassingthwaighte contributed a quick few runs before she too was out, bringing No.11 Lilli Hamilton to the crease with 25 runs still needed. With the equation 25 runs with one wicket and seven over remaining, the girls were unfazed and closed out the runs and the game in the 47th over.

Sophie’s tenacious rearguard 37 not out of 86 and her gritty partnerships with Scarlett and Lilli Hamilton in particular were instrumental in getting the girls over the line.

Congratulations on another back-from-the-dead win, ladies! Tough wins are becoming your forte!
