Game 1: vs Valleys
The Paul Pink Shield season finally began with the first T20 game again Valleys DCC. Everyone arrived bright and early to start a ride of a competition. The toss was won, and we elected to bat. The opening pair, Naiya Varidel and Isobel Goffage, put the team in a good position in the first 6 overs with a stand of 38 runs. The middle 10 overs were built with a 71-run partnership between Isobel and Emma Lockwood. After some quick wickets, the final total score was 3-145. Wests’ batting innings brought Isobel Goffage to achieve her maiden century with 100no off of 78 balls. Emma Lockwood finished with 14 (19) and Zaara Dancu contributed 13 (11).
The standout bowler through the second innings of round 1 was Takeira Whisson with only 4 runs off of 3 overs with 2 maidens and 1 double wicket maiden. Scarlett Varidel also claimed 2 wickets for 13 off 3 overs.
In the end Wests had their first win of the season by a big margin.
Game 2: vs Souths
In the afternoon round 2 v Souths DCC started and Wests’ again won the toss and elected to bat. The innings once again started with a 34-run partnership between Naiya Varidel and Isobel Goffage. Isobel went on to get 82 off of 67 balls and unfortunately was run out in the last few overs. Although she did get out, her outstanding performance in this game contributed largely to the end score of 5-140. Sofia Nearhos knocked some valuable late runs to finish with 16 off 11 and Naiya Varidel raced to 16 off 16 before an off cutter jagged in and took out her off stump.
Unfortunately, Wests’ was defeated by Souths DCC in the end although it was a very tight match as the bowling was led by great figures from Holly Walker who took 2 wickets in 3 overs with only 16 runs being scored off her. Holly also scored a direct-hit runout of South’s dangerous opening batsman.
