The Senior mens season started this past weekend for first and second grade with both teams taking on Sandgate – Redcliffe in the season opener. The first three rounds of the season form the beginning of the Kookaburra One Day Competition and both teams got off to a hot start.

Sandgate – Redcliffe 197 def by Wests Suburbs 3/201 at Trevor Hohns Oval
Sandgate won the toss and elected to bat. Blake Edwards and Ryan Tazelaar were the pick of the bowlers taking 3 and 2 wickets respectively. Jared Sippel led the way in the field with a direct hit run-out and a catch.
Steve Paulsen and Steve McGiffin put together a match winning partnership, both reaching half centuries. Their partnership was crucial to nullifying Mitchell Swepson who has caused us trouble in the past. – Paddy Dooley

Alan Pettigrew Shield Second Grade – Match report
Western Suburbs 9/221 def Sandgate – Redcliffe 124 at Graceville Memorial Oval No. 2
A young west’s outfit took on Sandgate – Redcliffe at the fortress we call Graceville 2. West’s won the toss and chose to bat with a brilliant opening stand by Max Carlyon and Lachlan Bell which set the tone for the innings. Josh Del Simone steadied the innings with a crafty 40 with the other boys chipping in bringing West’s to a competitive total of 9/211 off 50 overs.
West’s had the perfect start with Darcy Murphy taking a wickets with the first ball of the innings which was well gloved by Sam Dennien. Tom Whitney and Darcy bowled extremely well in their opening spells, taking 3 and 2 wickets respectively off 14 overs. Mitch Pearce, Conor and Lachie Bell cleaned up the remaining batters with some well disciplined line and length bowling and Darcy with a direct hit run out. West’s bowled out Sandgate – Redcliffe in the 38th over for 123 with an outstanding display in the field led by Ollie Maxwell and Desh Kongalage. All in all, a fantastic start to the season and great momentum going forward. – Zac Beveridge

Internal Trial
The remainder of the club got some preseason work in with an internal trial game held on Sunday at Graceville Memorial Oval No. 2. Cricket was the winner on the day with plenty of new players showing off their skills as we move towards round 1 on the 21st of September. Max Cartwright had a good day with the bat scoring 98 off 82 and Will Dooley took 3 for 13 off his 5 overs running through the top order. – Luke Donaldson
