The first ever round for the stage 3, Kirby Short Cup took place last Friday with the Wests Hawks taking on UQ Heat. The girls turned up, primed and ready for the fight. The toss was won and Wests elected to take to the batting crease.
Opening for the dogs was Naiya Varidel and Emma Lockwood, who started with a bang, which then came to a close with a jaffa of a delivery knocking down Naiya’s stumps in the first over of the innings. Shortly after, Emma’s wicket fell, but the Westies were well looked after as Eloise Schabe and Sophie Martin built a steady partnership. A few wickets down, Scarlett Varidel took to the crease and her strategic batting style brought the Westies to a defendable target, ending the innings with 115 runs.
After the short break, the dogs went out into the middle to knock over UQ. From the Northern end of Chelmer was Erin Moran who stormed in and delivered the perfect first over. She was then backed up by Eloise Schabe, who took the first wicket of the westies season only going for 2 runs in the over. After the pairs deathly spell, in came Jess Bryant who bowled magnificently in her first over going for no runs. The game was slipping away but when the anchor batsman was dismissed by Erin Moran, clean bowled, the tug of war was evening out. Even though the game didn’t finish as had hoped, the dogs fought it out to the end.

Scarlett Varidel back cuts to deep third man during her quick-fire 17no off 14 balls to bring home the Hawks innings. Sophie Martin scored 27 off just 33 balls. Quick Erin Moran had the UQ bats hopping early.
