Wests Paul Pink Shield premier youth girls team got off to the best possible start for their season with double wins this weekend over Wynnum/Manly and Ipswich/Logan.

Wil the first two games lost to the torrential rain last weekend, the remaining games in the PPS season have all become critical. The girls responded in the best possible fashion with a first-up blockbuster win over Wynnum/Manly and a hard fought victory over Ipswich/Logan, both at Ivor Marsden at Ipswich.

In the first game, Wests batted first and openers Isabel Goffage and Tanvi Aiyar took the score to 206 before captain Isabel fell in the eighteenth over for a brutal 130 off 64 balls which included 25 fours. Tanvi fell shortly after for an energetic 38 (43) and vice-captain Scarlett Varidel and Lacey Kennedy were left to apply the icing and take the total to 2/219 after 20 overs.

Wynnum/Manly lost key bat Allegra Pollack early caught at mid off by Olivia Totten off Isabel Goffage’s bowling. Wynnum/Manly pushed the score to 44 before the loss of three quick wickets to Holly Walker and Mia Brown took the wind out of their sails. Holly struck again to capture the sterling figures of 3/4 from 3 overs. Olivia Totten and Lacey Kennedy snared the final wickets to have Wynnum/Manly all out for 76 in the seventeenth over for a comprehensive 143-run victory.

The second game against a very strong Ipswich/Logan side was a very different affair. Wests again batted first with openers Isabel Goffage and Scarlett Varidel working hard against very accurate bowling. They took the score to 73 before Isabel was dismissed for 49 off 42 balls. Scarlett and Tanvi Aiyar pushed the total to 97 before Tanvi was dismissed for 11, and Scarlett departed soon after for 19. With contributions from Lacey Kennedy, Nicolene Snyman and Sophie Martin, Wests finished with 5/125 from their 20 overs.

Ipswich/Logan’s innings began disastrously when Sophie Martin captured the key batter Trinity Doyle first ball. They sunk into deeper trouble in the fifth over when keeper Scarlett Varidel stumped dangerous opener Arya Pal off the big-turning leg spin bowling of Allegra Nearhos. But Ipswich/Logan steadied and accumulated runs, taking the total to 91 at the end of the fifteenth over and seemingly cruising to victory before Mia Baker struck in the sixteenth over with two wickets in her first three deliveries. Nicolene Snyman captured a wicket in each of her next two overs and Ipswich Logan were in suddenly in deep trouble at 7/105 with 20 runs to get in the final over.

Wests closed out a 12-run the win in the final over to make it two-from-two for the day.

Great wins, girls! Have a great Christmas break and see you back for the next PPS rounds in early 2021!
