Western Suburbs District Cricket Club will celebrate its 100th season of participation in the Brisbane grade cricket competition during the upcoming 2020-21 premier cricket season!
The club was formed in 1921 as the Western Suburbs Electorate Cricket Club with a merger of the Toowong Electorate Cricket Club and the Goodna Cricket Club, and has played in Queensland Cricket Premier Cricket competition and its predecessors in every season since.
Wests traces its roots even further back through the Toowong Electorate Cricket Club which was one of the founding clubs in the inaugural QCA Electoral Cricket Competition in 1897/98. Read up on our club’s rich history on our website here.
The club’s committee is planning a number of special features to celebrate our centenary season, including facilities upgrades at Graceville Memorial Park and Chelmer Sports Ground, and a centenary dinner to close the season.
“Anyone that has played for Wests over the years understands it is more than just playing a game of cricket. “, says Wests’ President Greg Rowell. “Our players love being part of something bigger, a Club, a community, a tribe.
As an old timer you never cease to be surprised by how quickly the young players buy into it. They get it. To pull on the West’s cap in any summer is to immerse yourself in a special part of the game. But they know in this summer, the Club’s 100th season, is going to be one to remember.
It is a special chapter for all our players in their cricket journey. Everyone is excited, even a bit nervous. You can sense how keen everyone is to do West’s proud and honour all those that have gone before us in the service of this great Club.”
Stand by for lots of great stuff to come through the season, both on and off the field!
