They’re back! Wests has magnificent new nets at Graceville Memorial Park!
Gabba Sporting Products have done a great job completing a full refurbishment of the club’s practice nets at our Graceville home ground. The upgraded facility was used for the first time today by the Wests +Plus Cricket Academy followed immediately by both women’s and men’s grade cricket practice and passed its initial test with flying colours.
Apart from looking the goods with its two-tone synthetic grass surfacing, the rebuilt facility incorporates some great new features. The intermediate nets are able to be retracted to create a larger open area – useful for “live” practice scenarios. And net 1 features a spin wicket designed to give our slow bowlers some joy and our batsmen a headache!
Wests’ President Greg Rowell highlighted the additional value the new facility provides for our members. βIt is great to see the quality of our facilities starting to match the quality of our young players commitment to their teams, their team mates and their Club,’ he said. ‘Special thanks have to go to our WSDCC Committee for bring it together but really it is about returning the faith of our players and kicking off our one hundredth season on the right foot.β
The project included the replacement of the surfacing and nets structure of the six existing practice nets on the site. This work comprises Stage 1A of a multi-staged project to revitalise and expand the club’s previous aging facility.
Stage 1B will involve the replacement of the lights over the nets (and moving the light pole from the middle of the bowler’s end of net 5!). Stage 2 will see the construction of two additional synthetic grass practice wickets. The bowler’s runups will also be refurbished at the end of the current season. We hope to have these next stages under way shortly.
