Round 2 and the Wests girls are fired up, ready to roll in the fight against UQ. After last week’s performance a follow up win was in order.
The captain for this round, Annie Wikman, stepped up to the challenge as Meagan Dixon was out injured. Annie lost the toss. Their day was kicking off in the field.
Screaming in first was Holly Ferling from the northern end of Graceville 1, she was then accompanied by Courtney Sippel with their first 4 over spell. With two wickets fallen, in came Laura Harris, but the Westies didn’t back down. They fought long and hard as Olivia Hartland and Grace Harris partnered up for a great spell suffocating UQ’s run rate. The scoreboard kept ticking over but the runs weren’t Westies desired change. Erin Moran took to her runup as a first-grade debutant and ran in with no fear. From the other end, Annie Wikman, the captain herself, steamed in, like Erin, full-blast continuing the dogs momentum. Laura Harris still controlling the scoreboard hit her 50 and was accelerating to a tonne. So, in came Naiya Varidel who planted the foot down and ripped in a leggy, beating Laura’s top edge, whizzing straight to keeper, Ryleigh Wotherspoon, who then swiftly took the stumps. Roaring came from the field and the square leg umpires finger rose from his side. The innings was then rounded off at all out for 186 after 45 overs.
Grace Harris and Annie Wikman went to the crease to chase down the score. However, after 8 overs the Westies were down by 3 with only 32 runs on the board. Holly Ferling and Ryleigh Wotherspoon created an unbreakable partnership which was then capped at 81 runs. After some loss of wickets, Olivia Steel came in at 7 and accompanied Ryleigh in crossing the line.
Individual statistics:
