After 2 weeks of rained out games, Wests Thunder finally took to the field for their first game of the season as a new team, playing against ATC Purple at Toowong State School.
ATC won the toss and put us in to bat first. The kids did really well for their first game out in the middle, scoring a respectable 104 runs for the loss of 3 wickets, giving us a net score of 92 against a strong ATC bowling attack. After a solid start from our top order, the running between wickets improved with each over and kept the scoreboard ticking. Our tail-enders, George Walker and Tom Gower, finished the innings in strong fashion with a few cracking boundaries and both top-scoring with 17 and 19 respectively.
ATC came out firing with the bat and provided a good demonstration of running between wickets, finishing with 7 for 125, giving them a net score of 97 and making for a very close encounter in the end. Wests Thunder bowled really well in getting 7 wickets, with Tom Gower and Georgia Black the pick of the Thunder bowlers. We conceded a few too many easy runs in the field with over-throws – something we will continue to work on and no doubt improve as the season progresses.
Despite the loss, it was fantastic to see the kids rallying together as a team, having fun and supporting each other in all facets of the game. I know this team will go from strength to strength each week as the team plays more games together.
