After a win and a loss in the final two rounds of the Katherine Raymont Shield Twenty20 competition, Wests first grade women finished at the top of the table. The fantastic result carried them to the finals where they will take on Valleys in the first semi-final on Saturday January 11.

The women’s first game was a top-of the table clash against Sandgate-Redcliffe with Wests looking to repeat their Round 6 victory.

Wests started slowly in the face of tight bowling by Sandgate-Redcliffe’s openers. The pace quickened as Grace Harris (47) and Kirby Short (40)warmed to their work, then reduced after Grace departed in the tenth over. The innings was completed on 124 with Meagan Dixon and Tammy Cole at the crease.

Sandgate-Redcliffe’s innings got off to a rocky start with the early loss of opener Tess Cooper to Meagan Dixon’s bowling, but quickly stabilised in the hands of Australian star Beth Mooney and Jemma Barsby. Beth put on a batting masterclass, finishing with 87 runs of only 44 balls and Sandgate-Redcliffe took the game by 9 wickets in the fifteenth over.

The weekend’s second game was played on Sunday at Graceville Memorial Park. UQ batted first, and Wests were quickly among the wickets. UQ bats continued to fall regularly and the innings closed in the nineteenth over when the final wicket was taken with the score at 96. Grace Harris starred with the ball taking 5/21, and Courtney Sippel, Holly Ferling and Meagan Dixon all took top order wickets.

Wests’ opening duo of Grace Harris and Kirby Short required only 11 overs to overtake UQ’s total and complete a 10-wicket win.

Importantly, the win assured Wests of top place on the points table, and top seeding for the semi finals.
