Wests women’s First Grade team have claimed the Katherine Raymont Shield for the second year running with a 20-run victory over the Gold Coast Dolphins at Graceville Memorial Park.

Their victory went down to the wire with the Gold Coast showing a lot of grit to take the game to Wests in the last 10 overs. Wests batted first and compiled 8/239 runs from their 50 overs with Josie Dooley top scoring with 67 off 75, Kirby Short making 50 off 51, Courtney Sippel 44 off 56 and Holly Ferling 28 off 34.

Wests then bowled tightly from the beginning of the Gold Coast innings, restricting their scoring and taking three early wickets to have the Dolphins 3/37 in the 13th over. After Alex Lascu took the key wicket of Georgia Redmayne for 67 in the 29th the Gold Coast were 6/138 and looked to be in serious trouble.

Three more wickets fell in relatively quick succession, and when Lily Awyzio caught Gold Coast’s second highest scorer Tammy Wheeler off Holly Ferling for 37 in the 36th over, making the score 9/177, a Wests victory looked imminent. The final pair of Caitlin Woods and Hiruni Liyanarachchi Don had other ideas though; they fought hard, pushing the game to the 49th over before Liyanarachchi Don was caught at cover by Maggie Murphy off Ashley Sims for 19. Woods remained unbeaten on 23 with the Gold Coast all out for 219 with six balls remaining.

Meaghan Dixon took three key top order wickets and finished with 3 for 20 off 10, and Holly Ferling took 3 for 22 of her 10 overs. Ashley Sims captured 2 for 42 off 9 and Alex Lascu capture 1 for 48 of 10.

Congratulations ladies on a great season, and another trophy in the cabinet!
